機器視覺是用機器代替人眼來做測量和判斷，機器視覺系統(tǒng)是指通過機器視覺產(chǎn)品將被攝取目標轉(zhuǎn)換成圖像信號，傳送給專用的圖像處理系統(tǒng)，根據(jù)像素分布和亮度、顏色等信息，轉(zhuǎn)變成數(shù)字化信號；圖像系統(tǒng)對這些信號進行各種運算來抽取目標的特征，進而根據(jù)判別的結(jié)果來控制現(xiàn)場的設(shè)備動作。
隨著產(chǎn)品生產(chǎn)成本和上市時間的壓力與日俱增，生產(chǎn)商被迫使用更多的機器視覺自動化設(shè)備來取代傳統(tǒng)的工人和手工工藝；適合于人工作業(yè)的危險工作環(huán)境或人工視覺難以滿足要求的場合，常用機器視覺來替代人工視覺；在大批量工業(yè)生產(chǎn)過程中，用人工視覺檢查產(chǎn)品質(zhì)量效率低且精度不高，用機器視覺檢測方法可以大大提高生產(chǎn)效率和生產(chǎn)的自動化程度。在行業(yè)應(yīng)用方面，主要有制藥、包裝、電子、汽車制造、半導(dǎo)體、紡織、煙草、交通、物流等行業(yè)，用機器視覺技術(shù)取代人工，可以提供生產(chǎn)效率和產(chǎn)品質(zhì)量。例如在物流行業(yè)，可以使用機器視覺技術(shù)進行快遞的分揀分類，不會出現(xiàn)目前大多快遞公司人工進行分揀，減少物品的損壞率，可以提高分揀效率，減少人工勞動。
機器視覺系統(tǒng)除了光源、鏡頭、 相機、圖像處理軟件、監(jiān)視器等之外，最主要就是機器視覺控制器，其特點是性能優(yōu)、低功耗、智能控制、使用壽命長、可靠性要求較高，鑒于此，普遍選用工控機，商用機一般不在考慮之列，一般對控制器（工控機）的具體要求如下：
1. 控制器（工控機）要求長時間工作，可靠性要求較高，以降低后期維護費用；
2. 控制器（工控機）安裝于終端系統(tǒng)中，終端系統(tǒng)一般放置于工作車間內(nèi)，且?guī)в凶詣虞斔拖到y(tǒng)，受振動、灰塵等惡劣環(huán)境影響較大；
